According to the 2015 Florida Vital Statistics Annual Report, 166,921 marriages were performed in the state of Florida. This report also documented 80,204 marriages that were dissolved.
The group of married couples with the highest number of marriages dissolved, were married for a period between 5 – 9 years, accounting for 20,963 couples.
Additionally, Northeast Florida, including Duval, Nassau, St Johns and Clay Counties accounted for 11,101 marriages and 6,064 divorces in 2015. Throughout the state of Florida, the volume increased 11% from 2014 to 2015. Duval County saw a 7% increase over the same time period.
On January 6th 2015, the Federal Court ruled that Florida’s ban on same-sex marriages was not constitutional. Since then, thousands of same-sex couples have been married.
However, same-sex marriage and divorce numbers cannot be founded because County Clerk of Courts are not required to enter the gender of each person in a marriage or divorce.
Same-sex marriages now enjoy the same rights as traditional marriages. Wood, Atter and Wolf are experienced Jacksonville family law attorneys, providing legal services to both straight and LGBT clients.
