Since 2013, Michael Atter has served on the Board of Directors for the Five STAR Veterans Center in Jacksonville, Florida. He has been Board Chair for the past 2 years. Since then he has contributed over 500 hours of volunteer, Pro Bono services to Five STAR.
Five STAR Veterans Center is a residential housing facility in Jacksonville, Florida, which provides safe, secure housing, meals and other support to homeless veterans. It is the only housing facility in the Greater Jacksonville Area and Northeast Florida that provides such services exclusively to veterans, and it is the only such facility in the State of Florida that has an in-house mental health program (The Weaver Wellness Program) that provides professional counseling to veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and other mental health and personality disorders, including addiction in all its forms.
The Weaver Wellness Program was initiated in 2015 with a generous grant from the Weaver Foundation and Delores Barr Weaver, and it has served 84 residents since January, 2015. Of these, 29 have graduated on a promising trajectory, while the other participants continue to receive therapy ranging from individual therapy to group therapy with varying frequency and intensity, depending upon their individual needs. These figures do not include Outreach clients, as these services are also offered to non-residential veterans in the Jacksonville community. The Mission of Five STAR Veterans Center is to put homeless military veterans back to work and independence while providing secure housing with wraparound services, and counseling that promotes mental and physical wellness.
