Neck, Back and Spinal Cord injuries (Quadriplegia & Paraplegia)Jacksonville Spinal Cord Injury LawyersMost injuries that result from a slip or fall, automobile, motorcycle, truck or construction accident result in damage sustained to the neck, back or spinal cord. Frequently these types of injuries can be severe and recovery time lengthy. Neck, back and muscle injuries are the most common form of injuries resulting from these types of accidents. Most neck and back injuries include slipped, ruptured or herniated (bulging) discs, bone fractures, connective muscle injuries, and whiplash. Resulting symptoms can include: stiffness, pain, numbness, nausea, dizziness, muscle spasms. However, in some cases, the spinal cord is injured, which can result in paralysis in the most severe cases. Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) occurs when a traumatic event damages cells within the spinal cord or severs the nerve tracts that relay signals up and down the spinal cord.
The most common types of SCI include contusion (bruising of the spinal cord) and compression (caused by pressure on the spinal cord). Other types of injuries include lacerations (severing or tearing of nerve fibers) and central cord syndrome (specific damage to the corticospinal tracts of the cervical region of the spinal cord).
Severe SCI often causes paralysis (loss of control over voluntary movement and muscles of the body) and loss of sensation and reflex function below the point of injury, including autonomic activity such as breathing and other activities such as bowel and bladder control. Depending upon the level of the injury to the spinal cord, this can result in Quadriplegia (paralysis from the neck down, involving both arms and both legs) or Paraplegia (paralysis in both legs). Other symptoms such as pain or sensitivity to stimuli, muscle spasms, and sexual dysfunction may develop over time. SCI patients are also prone to develop secondary medical problems, such as bladder infections, lung infections, and bed sores. Treatments range from physical therapy, medications to surgery in the most severe cases.
Who are the Most Susceptible to these Types of InjuriesAmong persons under age 65, automobile and other motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of SCIs. Among persons over 65, falls are the leading cause of SCIs. Other causes include:
