If you are considering a dissolution of your marriage, you are not alone. According to the 2015 Florida Vital Statistics Annual Report, 166,921 marriages were performed in the state of Florida. This report also documented 80,204 marriages that were dissolved. The group of married couples with the highest number of marriages dissolved, were married for a period between 5 - 9 years, accounting for 20,963 couples. Additionally, Northeast Florida, including Duval, Nassau, St Johns and Clay Counties accounted for 11,101 marriages and 6,064 divorces in 2015. Throughout the state of Florida, the volume of marriages increased 11% from 2014 to 2015. Duval County experienced a 7% increase over the same time period.
On January 6th 2015, the Federal Court ruled that Florida’s ban on same sex marriages was unconstitutional. Since then, 1000’s of same sex couples have entered into matrimony. However, same sex marriage and divorce numbers cannot be calculated because County Clerk of Courts are not required to identify the gender of each person entering into a marriage or divorce. Same sex marriages now enjoy the same rights, privileges, and legal obligations as traditional marriages.
