Patent holders can prevent others from making commercial use of their inventions without their permission.  Not only does a patent enable its holder to keep others from making, selling or implementing their precise invention, but it may also enable them to apply patent monopoly rights to prevent others from making commercial use of any similar type of invention for the length of the patent.
